The Academy Award nominees were recently announced and the Oscars will be handed out on March 7, 2010 in Hollywood, California. That night, millions of people will be glued to their TV sets to ogle the biggest celebrities decked out in their finest attire and to see if Avatar takes home best picture honors.
In honor of the motion picture awards ceremony, which is in its 82nd year, I thought it would be fun to take a look at the best movie snacks for Bootcampers. Try these foods the next time you’re out at the movie theater or sitting at home popping a DVD in for the evening.
- Popcorn: What’s a movie without popcorn, right? Did you know that buttered popcorn that smells so great at the concession stand is loaded with 600 calories and 39 grams of fat? And that’s just in a medium size. Ask for your popcorn unbuttered and bring along your own seasoning for extra flavor. Or pop up a fat-free version in your microwave at home. It smells just as good and will fill you up with fiber without expanding your waistline.
- Candy: There are lots of choices here, most of them loaded with sugar, calories and fat. One of the best options is a box of Good & Plenty licorice. It contains a mere 133 calories and zero grams of fat.
- Chocolate: If you must indulge in a chocolate fix, pick a chocolate-covered candy instead of a chocolate bar. Junior Mints are a nice compromise since a half box contains a respectable 3 grams of fat and 170 calories. Split a box with your movie companion or save the rest for later.
- Fruit Candy: The good news here is that most chewy fruit treats are fat-free. When it comes to calories and sugars, however, not all are created equal. A two-ounce serving of Swedish Fish, for example, has 33% less sugar and 30% fewer calories than a serving of Dots.
