Lessons from the “Godfather of Fitness”

Jack LaLanne, who took fitness to the TV masses in 1951, is now 95 years old. Dubbed the “Godfather of Fitness,” this health and nutrition pioneer opened the nation’s first modern fitness club in Oakland, California 74 years ago. Clearly, he has earned his rightful retirement, but is he taking it easy in his golden years? Not in the least, which might explain why he’s still going so strong as he nears the century mark.
LaLanne recently sat down with American Profile to discuss what daily routines have kept him so young and spry all these years. Let them serve as a lesson to all you Bootcampers of what constitutes a long life well lived.
- LaLanne works out for two hours each morning. – That’s well ahead of the government’s recommendation of 60–90 minutes per day.
- He eats at least 10 raw vegetables and five fresh fruits a day. – Again, that’s about double what the Food Pyramid suggests. And to help others achieve the same consumption levels, he was instrumental in making juicers popular. His motto: “That’s the power of the juice!”
- He’s still passionate about spreading the merits of regular exercise and good nutrition. – Numerous studies suggest that having a passion in life extends the lifespan.
- He rises at five o’clock each morning to stretch, lift, pull and swim. – Notice that this regimen covers all the qualities of a solid workout: warm-up, aerobics, weight resistance and stretching.
- He has used his milestone birthdays to set new fitness goals and challenges for himself. – To commemorate his 70th year, he “towed 70 boats carrying 70 people across Long Beach Harbor, with both hands and feet shackled.”
- He minces no words when it comes to slackers: “Would you give your dog a cup of coffee, a cigarette and a doughnut in the morning? Would you put garbage in your car’s gas tank? Well, why do that to your human machine? It’s killing us.”
Take it from Jack. Whatever age you reach, you owe it to yourself to make each day the best one that can be lived.
